Snow warning for lower South Island

6:06 am on 15 June 2009

MetService has issued a snow warning for the lower South Island with gale force winds expected to bring blizzard conditions.

Snow is expected to low levels on Monday in Southland, South Otago and Dunedin and it is expected to be very cold.

Snow is forecast to near sea-level at night with a burst of heavy snow overnight and into Tuesday.

MetService warns conditions are likely to disrupt many roads, while strong to gale force winds will produce extreme wind chill.

The front is expected to head north, bringing snow to Banks Peninsula in Canterbury and the Desert Road in the central North Island by Tuesday.

Farmers have been warned to consider moving vulnerable stock to sheltered areas.
