Wellington trains resume

5:33 pm on 27 June 2013

After almost a week of disruption, the rail service between Petone and Wellington is running again.

Last Thursday night's storm washed away sea walls and left train tracks and overhead lines badly damaged.

KiwiRail contractors spent the week repairing the line and deemed it safe to reopen on Thursday morning after a test run late on Wednesday night.

TranzMetro said trains on the Wairarapa, Hutt Valley and Melling lines should all be running to the regular timetable.

However, the 8am train from Johnsonville - Wellington had to be cancelled because of slippery tracks. The line is now open again.

There are 15-minute delays on the Wairarapa and Hutt Valley line because of a mechanical fault.

And some services from Porirua - Wellington are running late because of heavy passenger loads.
