Wellington City Council says repairs to the city after last week's storm could run into seven figures.
Spokesperson Richard MacLean says there is a huge amount of cleanup, with many trees needing clearing in parks and bush land.
But that cleanup has yet to begin because the focus has been on keeping roads clear and the safety of residents.
Mr MacLean says the council is also giving support to those still without power, offering the use of recreation centres for showers and hot water.
Wellington Electricity says about 450 properties still need to be reconnected.
