Protesters attempt to block house removal

7:32 am on 13 June 2013

Protesters have thrown recycling bins in the path of trucks in an attempt to stop the removal of state houses from an east Auckland suburb.

About two dozen protesters and up to 60 spectators were at the removal of the three houses from Taniwha Street in Glen Innes about 10.30pm on Wednesday.

Housing New Zealand is moving more than 150 houses from the suburb as part of a redevelopment project.

Up to 20 police officers had to force people from the road as they tried to stop trucks from leaving.

A construction worker says two people broke the glass of a pilot vehicle travelling with the trucks.

The police say two arrests they made were unrelated to the protest.

Aroha Robson, who says she has lived in the area all her life, says the removal will have a negative impact on the community.
