Two policemen and a civilian accused of the manslaughter of a New Zealand man in Tonga have appeared in the Supreme Court in the capital Nuku'alofa.

Kali Fungavaka died while in police custody in 2012.

Matangi Tonga is reporting that a trial date will not be set until two appeals regarding the case are heard on 24 June.

One of the accused, Inspector Kelepi Hala'ufia, is appealing against the result of a preliminary inquiry at the Magistrates Court in February this year, which committed him and two others to trial in the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the Crown is appealing against the same decision, which allowed three co-accused to walk free due to insufficient evidence.
