1200 illegal campers told to move on

Some 1200 people were moved on from illegal campsites in Fiordland over the summer during a crackdown on freedom campers.

The Department of Conservation's Te Anau freedom camping programme began in 2011 after ongoing public complaints about campervans in the township.

Programme manager Annie Wallace says two rangers told 1200 freedom campers to move on between November 2012 and April this year.

Mrs Wallace says most of them shifted to local campsites, but four were fined for reoffending.

She says the extra business for local campsites was a great boost to the region's accommodation sector.

The programme, which is part-funded by the Southland District Council, is expected to run again next summer.
