A new dental service at the University of Canterbury has carried out 500 fillings and about 100 wisdom teeth extractions in a five-week test run.
The subsidised Burnside Community Dental Centre officially opened on Tuesday.
Students Association president Erin Jackson says she believes the service is the first of its kind in Australasia.
The student services' levy will subsidise the scheme by about $200,000 a year, meaning students will pay a small portion of the cost.
Ms Jackson expects about 2000 students to use the service.
She says the scheme will attract some students to the university.
