First-time mothers missing out on childbirth education

Many first-time mothers are not being formally educated on childbirth, according to a report released on Friday.

The research on antenatal education and maternity care was funded by the Families Commission in association with the group Parents Centres NZ and the Parenting Council.

It shows less than half of all pregnant women attend antenatal classes, and Maori and Pacific Island women are severely under-represented.

Parents Centres NZ says support and education on childbirth helps ensure a baby's life begins positively.
