About 40 officers have been recognised for their service at the Canterbury Police Awards.

The ceremony on Tuesday acknowledged officers for their long service and outstanding work.

Detective Inspector Virginia Le Bas was awarded the 21 Years Long Service Star and the Commissioner's Award.

Ms Le Bas has worked on a number of high-profile investigations and advocates for women's leadership.

She says she hopes her achievement will inspire other women to achieve their goals.

Meanwhile, teenagers Liam Robinson and Angus Bailey have been recognised for acts of bravery and received the District Commander's Commendation.

The 14-year-olds pulled an unconscious man from a submerged Toyota Hilux which had crashed into the Halswell River in February this year.

Superintendent Gary Knowles said their actions saved the man's life.
