Christchurch City Council has approved more than $500,000 for upgrading Hagley Oval for first-class cricket matches.
The public's views were divided during the submissions process.
Some said the project would spur the Christchurch recovery, while others argued that Hagley Park should remain a public space, not a commercial venture.
The funding would go towards the completion of the wicket, the practice wicket and the levelling of the outfield, as well as drainage and irrigation work.
The council said that work is limited to the upgrade project and distinct from proposals to develop Hagley Oval further.
A further $1 million has been set aside for future development.
Canterbury Cricket has previously said it hopes the ground will be used to host games for the 2015 World Cup.
