The Palmerston North coroner is still considering whether to hold an inquest into the death of the Feilding farmer Scott Guy.
Mr Guy was found shot dead at the end of his driveway in the early hours of 8 July, 2010. His brother-in-law Ewen Macdonald was acquitted of his murder in July last year and no one else has been charged.
A spokesperson for coroner Carla na Nagara says discussions are underway with the police about the way forward and it is hoped a decision might be reached within the next two months.
Meanwhile, Mr Macdonald remains in prison serving a five-year sentence for other offences, including arson, vandalism and killing calves before Mr Guy's death. He is next eligible for parole in December.
