Whangarei mayor says two super-councils best option

The Whangarei District Council favours two unitary authorities in Northland in a proposal to the Local Government Commission.

The Far North District Council started the reform ball rolling when it applied to the commission to become a unitary council last year.

The commission has since asked other councils in the region to put up alternative options.

The creation of two unitaries or super-councils - one in the Far North and one in Whangarei - would mean doing away with the Northland Regional Council.

Its assets would then be split and its powers delegated to the two new councils.

Whangarei mayor Morris Cutforth says community opinion has been fairly evenly split between one unitary for the whole region or two.

Mr Cutforth says his council believes that an area as big as Northland would be best served by two, with Kaipara coming within Whangarei's boundary.
