Wellington water usage lower

3:05 pm on 30 March 2013

The Wellington Regional Council says water use has decreased but probably only because people have left the city for the Easter break.

Outdoor water use is prohibited because of the on-going drought.

On Thursday, the region consumed 119 million litres of water - 11 million litres lower than the daily target.

Regional council chair Fran Wilde says the region was using on average about 160 million litres a day before restrictions were enforced.

She says the savings need to be maintained until at least the next significant rainfall.

Ms Wilde says river levels are starting to drop again and it is hoped Sunday will bring rain.

More rain is also expected from Thursday.
