Christchurch police are clamping down on boy racer activity as it returns to pre-earthquake levels.
Twenty-five officers are now assigned to the Boy Racer Squad instead of five.
Last week, Police Minister Anne Tolley said illegal street racing offences had fallen by 35% nationwide since 2009 following the introduction of legislation allowing cars to be crushed.
But Acting Sergeant Clay Penrose says the law change is not a deterrent to boy racers and there have been no cars crushed in Christchurch.
Mr Penrose says street racing activity declined after the destructive quakes of 2010 and 2011, but there has been a sharp increase in recent months.
Meanwhile, boy racers are planning to hold a peaceful protest outside the police station in central Christchurch on Friday night.
A Facebook page promoting the protest says they are tired of being harassed and targeted by police and tells boy racers to park-up outside the station at 11pm for a peaceful demonstration.
Senior Sergeant Phil Newton says no extra officers will be put on to deal with the protest.
Mr Newtown says the boy racers have the right to protest and expects it to be trouble-free.
