Visitors 'often targeted' by criminals in NZ

The Tourism Industry Association says a series of armed robberies in two sightseeing spots shows the country is not immune from violent acts towards visitors.

Police are searching for a man who fired five shots into the ground at the summit of Mount Eden on Sunday evening and robbed four people.

One of those robbed was a tour guide and two others were sightseers.

The Tourism Industry Association says although New Zealand is a safe place, visitors are often targeted by criminals.

It said tourists should take the same precautions they would in their own country.
