A man has appeared in the Nelson District Court on Monday charged with the rape of a woman in Nelson on New Year's Day.
Hilton Hone Heke, 22, is accused of attacking the woman, aged 62, in broad daylight as she worked in the Victory community gardens.
Judge Phillip Moran remanded him in custody while further reports are carried out to assess the case.
The accused will reappear for a committal hearing on 1 May.
