Two North Island cities are piloting a programme to get people out of their cars and into walking, cycling or taking the bus.

New Plymouth and Hastings are test cases in a project for the Transport Agency which has provided funding to encourage physical modes of transport.

Let's Go project manager Carl Whittleston said New Plymouth District Council has spent $6.6 million in the past 2½ years in upgrading walkways, modifying roads and running cycle and scooter skills programmes in schools.

Hastings City Council said it has secured more than $4 million from NZTA to put in a whole lot of cycleways.
