New liquor licensing regime feared

Bars, restaurants and shops selling alcohol fear a new licensing regime will send them out of business.

The Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act will allow residents to have a say and councils will decide the number and opening hours of alcohol outlets instead of the Liquor Licensing Authority.

It is seen by some as the biggest change since the end of 6pm closing in the 1960s.

Hospitality Association national president Adam Cunningham said more restrictions and higher fees for licences will be the last straw for struggling businesses.

He said firms fear a lack of consistency across the country.

The legislation comes into force at the end of the year.
