A Board of Inquiry has resumed hearings into a controversial proposed highway north of Wellington.
The McKay's Crossing to Peka Peka expressway is a 16km stretch of road estimated to cost more than $600 million.
It is one of the Government's Roads of National Significance and will require the removal of about 30 homes.
The hearing began before a board of four commissioners in mid-November and ran for four weeks, before resuming today.
One of today's submitters, Paula Warren, co-presented a proposal against the project on behalf of three groups - Public Transport Voice, Living Streets Aotearoa and the National Transport Society.
She says a better solution is to leave the highway as it is, and divert local traffic away from it on a new road.
The Transport Agency's application for resource consent triggered 725 submissions, including 302 in favour and 408 opposed.
