Seven people have been admitted to hospital with toxic shellfish poisoning.
Between Friday and Saturday afternoons five people were taken to Rotorua Hospital and another two to Tauranga Hospital with symptoms including diarrhoea and vomiting, tingling round the mouth and face, tingling skin and weakness when walking.
By Saturday evening, all but two had been discharged.
The Lakes District Health Board says the patients had eaten shellfish collected from the coastline between Mount Maunganui and Papamoa.
The DHB says a warning not to collect bi-valve shellfish and kina has been in place in parts of the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty since August, due to high levels of paralytic shellfish toxin.
It says paua, crabs and crayfish are safe to eat if the gut is removed before cooking.
