Police say a motorcycle rider was killed in an accident during a race at Timaru's Levels raceway on Saturday afternoon.
They say that during the first lap of a race involving about 30 riders, a rider near the front of the pack fell from his bike and slid across the track.
Other riders scattered in an attempt to avoid the fallen rider but one was unable to avoid him and he was struck.
Family are currently being contacted and no further details are available, other than that the dead man is from the Canterbury area and is in his 40s.
