Timber industry wants freeze on fees

9:33 am on 8 February 2009

The Timber Industry Federation wants the Government to freeze consent fees and regulatory charges because of the economic downturn.

Executive director Wayne Coffey says some exporters have seen their incomes halved because of reduced demand and it's time for the Government to share the burden.

Mr Coffey says the Government has signalled it will keep price increases for the charges to within the rate of inflation, but he wants an immediate freeze instead.

He says that would signal that local and central Government is sensitive to companies having to compete internationally for business.
