Open letter to PM on 'democracy' issues in Christchurch

10:15 pm on 4 December 2012

Christchurch opposition party MPs are calling for the Prime Minister to restore what they say is democracy in the city.

Eugenie Sage, Lianne Dalziel and Denis O'Rourke joined with seven community groups to present an open letter to John Key on the steps of Parliament on Tuesday.

Mr Sage says the symbolic letter asks Mr Key to hold elections for the Canterbury Regional Council and halt the demolition of heritage buildings and urges the Education Minister to hold genuine consultations on its plans for the city's schools.

The letter also asks the Prime Minister to reassess the deadline for families to evacuate the red zone.
