Pay parity coalition in aged care sector

8:26 am on 21 November 2012

Aged care agencies, unions and others are to form a coalition to push for pay parity for those in the aged care sector.

A Human Rights Commission report published in May found a difference of 16% between the pay of caregivers in aged care and those doing similar work in public hospitals. The commission called that an injustice.

Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner Judy McGregor will be the interim chair when a coalition meets for the first time in Wellington next Tuesday.

Bupa, a rest home operator, says it agrees with the aim of pay parity but believes it could be achieved gradually.
