Safety warning to tourists seen as not good for NZ tourism

The Tourism Industry Association says a warning from the Dutch government about travelling in New Zealand is not good for the tourism industry.

The warning cites a rape and attack on two Dutch tourists in Tuatapere last week and a similar attack on two Dutch tourists in Paihia in 2006.

An alert on the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs website advises visitors to New Zealand not to camp in remote sites.

Tourism Industry Association chief executive Tim Cossar, says the advice is sensible.

He says the warning endorses what those in the industry have been saying for some time, that tourists need to exercise caution
