Dip in food prices

12:25 pm on 13 November 2012

Food prices fell last month because of lower prices for fruit and vegetables, but this was partly offset by higher grocery prices.

Official figures show the food price index fell 0.6% in October, compared with the previous month.

Fruit and vegetables prices fell 5.5% while grocery prices increased half a percent from the previous month.

However, prices rose 0.3% compared with October last year.

Annually fruit and vegetables were up 8.4%, but groceries decreased 2.7%.

Food prices make up 19% of the consumer price index.
