Police investigating an armed home invasion in Auckland say it was planned attack on a house that was known to host gambling activities.

They say five men in disguise and armed with guns, a hammer and spade broke into the Mt Roskill house while the six occupants were playing a game of cards about 1am on Friday.

In what police say was a planned and deliberate attack, the assailants made off with thousands of dollars of cash, jewellery and a car described as a black Toyota Camry.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Sutton told Radio New Zealand's Checkpoint programme the house on Duke Street has been hosting card games involving money for three or four nights a week over the past couple of years.

Mr Sutton says one of the men was struck in the face with a butt of a rifle and was hospitalised.

A collie dog that was shot in the house is expected to recover.
