Kiwifruit packhouses will next year be stick a first fully compostable fruit label on more than a hundred million organic kiwifruit.

Zespri has spent the past four years working with a manufacturer in the United States to perfect a label which will stick to a hairy skin, hold together in cool and hot temperatures, and then break down when it's disposed of.

Global marketing manager Glen Arrowsmith said the labels are made from cornstarch, a biodegradable material. They will look the same, to avoid any confusion.

A full launch of the new labels next week, following a successful trial with five million organic kiwifruit sold in North America, Asia and Europe this year.
