A Wairarapa man is in intensive care with head injuries sustained in an altercation with another man in Martinborough on Saturday night.
Peter Fisher, a volunteer fireman, had been called to help a group of young women at a house party in Broadway Street, who had been unsettled by a man from a neighbouring property.
Mr Fisher was knocked to the ground and repeatedly attacked during an altercation.
Police arrested a man, 25, who is to appear in Masterton District Court on assault charges.
