Milled and sculpted from huge blocks of polystyrene and coated in epoxy resin, the sculpture weighs 1.2 tonnes.

Suspended from the ceiling inside the airport terminal, shows Gollum under water and trying to catch three fish.

The piece had to be created as nine separate components to fit through the doors of the airport, and was installed over three nights.

Wellington Airport chief executive Steve Sanderson says the project had been kept secret until the last minute, and was getting a big reaction on social networks on Friday.

Mr Sanderson says the work began on the sculpture six months ago and continued right up to early Friday morning.

The film's premiere is on 28 November.
