Police in New Plymouth have launched a homicide inquiry following the discovery of a body in the back seat of a vehicle.
The body was found at about 2.30pm on Saturday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Coward said a vehicle was located near a place known as Meeting of the Waters just south of New Plymouth.
He describes the car as a maroon/purple 1987 Commodore sedan and is asking anyone who has seen it to contact police.
