A Wellington City Council committee has approved a new strategy aimed at eradicating homelessness in the city.

The plan was developed at a summit in May involving more than 40 city and government agencies, ranging from the Department of Corrections to drug and alcohol counsellors.

On Thursday, the first draft was accepted by the Wellington City Council's strategy and policy committee. It is also being considered by other agencies which will be involved.

City councillor Stephanie Cook says the plan aims to prevent people at risk of becoming homeless from ending up on the streets, and to reacting quickly to those who are homeless.

Ms Cook says an important aspect of the strategy is ensuring that all the agencies communicate with each other to identify anyone in danger of living on the street.
