Stretch of central Christchurch street reopened

7:45 pm on 18 October 2012

Part of Gloucester Street in central Christchurch was reopened at 5pm on Thursday, following a three-week closure while the Farmers and Crystal Plaza buildings were being pulled down.

The reopened stretch is between Oxford Tce and the Isaac Theatre Royal, allowing cars to drive one-way through the city centre from east to west.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says the demolition of the Farmers building is now at a stage that allows for the safe reopening, but work will continue on the building for several more weeks.

The authority says temporary road closures will continue to occur as the city is rebuilt.
