The Gambling Commission says the negotiations over the Auckland Casino have resulted in intense interest in gambling matters.

In its annual report released on Monday, the commission points out it is not involved in the Government's negotiations with SkyCity to build a convention centre in return for an increase in its gaming operations.

However, it says the negotiations have increased interest in the commission's work and requests for information.

SkyCity's Auckland casino is New Zealand's largest, with 1647 gaming machines.

The commission says the total number of gaming machines in New Zealand continued to fall last year and now stands at 17,943 compared with 25,000 in 2003.
