Police have suspended the search for a man swept into the sea at the Rakaia River mouth last Sunday.

The family of Victor Edward Boraman, 21, has been told the search has been suspended.

A Westpac Rescue helicopter crew from Christchurch located Mr Boraman in the water last Sunday, but he was swamped by a wave just as they were about to rescue him.

He had been whitebaiting with two friends when he was swept into the sea.

Searches in the last week have involved volunteers using quad bikes and a Coastguard Air Patrol aircraft but no trace of Mr Boraman has been found.
