Norovirus number doubles at Middlemore Hospital

9:00 pm on 2 October 2012

The number of patients and staff at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital infected with norovirus has more than doubled.

As of Tuesday, 45 staff members and 45 patients have the stomach bug, up from 39 confirmed cases on Sunday.

Despite efforts to isolate the infection to the ward where it first arose on Friday, it has been picked up in other areas of the hospital.

Middlemore Hospital isn't letting children visit unless on compassionate grounds and is asking the public to visit only if they have been free of symptoms for at least two days.
