Tauranga Hospital is urging the public not to go to the hospital unless it is absolutely urgent.
It says the gastroenteritis bug norovirus is spreading quickly, with 22 patients already ill.
The hospital says people should only come if they have prearranged appointments or are in an emergency.
Norovirus is also affecting Middlemore Hospital in Auckland where nearly 40 patients and staff have come down with it.
