in a new study.

The possibility of a viable oil and gas industry on the North Island's East Coast will be assessed

in a new study.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and the regional economic development agency Business Hawke's Bay will look at the potential benefits of developing oil and gas fields in the region.

Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce says the study will also give the Government a clearer picture of the infrastructure that may need to be built and environmental risks associated with the development or oil and gas fields on the East Coast.

The study is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.
