TVNZ plans to end current affairs show

9:47 pm on 27 September 2012

Television New Zealand is proposing to end its long running evening current affairs show Close Up.

Close Up and the Holmes incarnation that preceded it have been running since the 1980s.

TVNZ says the proposed closure is in response to feedback that television viewers are looking for something fresh and different in early evening current affairs.

It says it wants to reinvent the early evening slot and present stories in a different way.

The company says everyone on the show is aware that traditional current affairs formats are losing favour with audiences and this format has simply run its course.

Sixteen people work on Close Up.

TVNZ says consultation with them begins on Thursday and an outcome is expected by mid-October.
