Team works to clean up Napier harbour spill

Booms helped contain a spill in the Napier Harbour as a Hawke's Bay regional council oil spill team worked overnight to remove diesel from the water.

A leaking fishing vessel spilled 1500 litres into the harbour near the Napier Sailing Club on Friday evening.

Hawke's Bay regional council says staff worked until 3am to suction the diesel out of the water.

A Blue Penguin had a light coating of diesel and was cared for by a wildlife specialist.

The council said the oil response team would continue removing the spilled diesel on Saturday. All boating ramps have been reopened.
