One lane of Manawatu Gorge reopens

11:55 pm on 29 August 2012

The Manawatu Gorge has re-opened to one lane of traffic.

The state highway between Woodville and Ashhurst had earlier been closed for nine months after massive landslides last year. A temporary road was built, but that was washed out in May.

From 4pm on Wednesday, traffic from Woodville can use the road 24 hours a day.

The gorge will also be open to traffic travelling in both directions at night between 6pm and 8am.

Vehicles coming from the Ashhurst end will still have to use alternative routes during the day.

The Transport Agency's state highways manager for Palmerston North says $20 million has been spent on fixing the road and is confident it will hold up for many more years.

David McGonigal says both lanes should be open by the end of September.
