Crews battle trawler fire at Port of Lyttelton

Fire crews are battling a blaze on a fishing vessel in dry dock at the Port of Lyttelton, near Christchurch.

The Fire Service was called to the blaze on the 60-metre trawler Ocean Breeze at 5.30pm on Wednesday and has sent 13 fire engines to the scene.

Spokesperson Riwai Grace says a water jet sent through a hole drilled in the starboard side of the bow significantly reduced the blaze and allowed crews to get on the deck with hand-held hoses later in the night.

Mr Grace says no one was on board before the fire started or has been injured in the blaze and expects investigators to find out the cause on Thursday.

The Lyttelton Tunnel was initially closed to all but emergency vehicles, but is now open.
