United Nations Development Programme administrator Helen Clark is encouraging agricultural students in New Zealand to develop solutions to combat world hunger.

Miss Clark spoke at Lincoln University on Monday night on sustainable development.

The former prime minister of New Zealand told the audience the goal of the UN programme is to eradicate extreme poverty around the world.

Miss Clark said universities can help design sustainable food systems.

Although the world produces enough food for everyone, she said 925 million people are undernourished.

She said as a big food producer, New Zealand needs to get engaged.
