An increasing amount of a new group of mind-altering Class C drug is being seized at the border, according to new figures released by Customs.
In the past two year, Customs officers have intercepted about 32kg of the substance known as 'Bath Salts'. About 12 grams was seized in the first six months of this year.
Customs group manager Bill Perry says Bath Salts usually arrive in New Zealand in a white powder form and is often sold as a form of Ecstasy.
Meanwhile, officers are picking up less methamphetamine, also known as 'P'.
Mr Perry says staff are trying to break the supply chain of organised crime groups, which continue to find new ways to sneak drugs into the country.
In 2010, Customs seized 978kg of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine products, used to make methamphetamine, compared with 107 to June this year.
