Miners return to work at Waihi gold mine

8:00 am on 21 July 2012

Work has resumed at the Trio Gold Mine at Waihi two days after a truck fire caused the evacuation of the underground mine.

On Tuesday morning, smoke in the mine forced 28 workers into refuge centres before they could return to the surface.

Newmont Gold, which owns the mine, says workers went back in on Thursday night to inspect for any damage.

A underground crew started back at work on Friday and production has resumed.

The company says the burnt out truck will be cordoned off until it cools down enough to be examined.

It says investigations in to the cause of the fire and the evacuation of the miners is expected to take more than a week.

The company says one thing it will change is how to contact miners' families, as some of those underground during the fire had given their own cellphone numbers as the best way to make contact.
