A Christchurch-based seafood company is recalling several of its frozen oyster products after some were found to be contaminated with the highly contagious stomach bug, norovirus.
United World Foods says some of its Sea Cuisine oysters, which are imported from China, were tested for the virus when two people in Auckland became sick after eating the product.
Chief executive Andre Kotzikas says the virus has only been found in some bags of Sea Cuisine raw oysters, however, the brand's battered, crumbed and floured oysters have also been recalled as a precaution.
Mr Kotzikas says the Chinese factory that supplies the oysters has been told about the recall.
He says all Sea Cuisine products will be tested before being distributed until he is satisfied there is no longer a problem.
Norovirus can cause gastroenteritis resulting in diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach cramps.
