Bail denied for Urewera pair

10:53 pm on 16 July 2012

Two men found guilty of firearms offences related to military-style camps in Te Urewera National Park in 2007 have been denied bail pending an appeal hearing.

Tame Iti and Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara were both sentenced to prison for two and a half years in May this year, following a jury trial and sentencing in the High Court in Auckland.

Both men are appealing against their convictions and sentences.

In a judgment issued on Monday, the Court of Appeal ruled the men will remain in prison, as they have not met the threshold which applies to those seeking bail pending an appeal.

The appeal hearing will take place on 22 August.
