A magnitude 5.3 earthquake has been felt in Bay of Plenty.
The earthquake occurred at 2.01am on Saturday.
It was centred 60km south of Whakatane and was 60km deep.
GeoNet says it was felt in the east of the central North Island.
A second earthquake struck 20 km north-west of Gisborne later in the morning.
The magnitude 4.2 tremor occurred at 7.53am and was at a depth of 30 kilometres. It was felt in Gisborne.
