Kawerau school loses court bid to stay open

A Bay of Plenty school has lost its bid in the High Court to stop the school's closure.

Last year, the Government decided to shut Kawerau Intermediate and merge it with Kawerau College, creating a new school on the college site from the start of 2013.

The school's board of trustees went to the High Court to seek a judicial review of how the closure decision was made, but the court has ruled in the Education Minister's favour.

Kaweray Intermediate principal Daryl Aim says the ruling is disappointing, but it will not pursue the case further.

Mr Aim says everything has been on hold while the school has fought the decision, and it is time to accept what the judge has ruled and support the new school.
