Murder accused to have psychiatric assessment

8:18 pm on 12 July 2012

The man accused of killing a Christchurch woman in the suburb of Burwood has been remanded in custody for a psychiatric assessment.

A woman's body was discovered at a property in the eastern suburb on Wednesday morning.

Police arrested a 29-year-old Kaiapoi man and charged him with murder.

He appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Thursday. Judge Robert Musfitt suppressed all details relating to the identity of the victim and the accused at the request of police.

A psychiatrist recommended to the court that the man be further assessed in custody.

She said she believed he fulfilled the criteria for a defence of insanity, but a further inquiry needed to be made.

A post-mortem was carried out on the woman's body today and police will continue their scene examination of the house in Travis Road over the coming days.
